What Is Ozempic® (Semaglutide)?

What Is Ozempic® (Semaglutide)?

Ozempic® is a weekly injection medication originally developed to manage type 2 diabetes. [1] While Ozempic® is not approved by the FDA for weight loss, it can be prescribed off-label if deemed appropriate by a healthcare provider. [2] The active ingredient in Ozempic® is semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, which is a class of drugs that improves blood sugar control and may aid in weight loss. [1-3] Research shows that Ozempic® can help people feel full for longer, decrease appetite, improve the levels of glucose and insulin in the body, and may help reduce the risks of heart attack, stroke, or death in adults with type 2 diabetes and heart disease, likely as a side effect of reduction in body mass. [1-3]

Ozempic® is not FDA-approved for weight loss but is sometimes prescribed off-label if deemed appropriate by a healthcare provider. [1]
