Testing benefits

In-person testing for 7 common STIs

Chlamydia

Caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, chlamydia is a very common sexually transmitted infection that can be treated with antibiotics. Despite being easy to treat, the prevalence of chlamydia is high because most people with an infection have no symptoms and do not seek treatment, according to the CDC. Treatment may be available for positive results.

Syphilis

Syphilis is caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. Syphilis is divided into stages (primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary). The number of primary and secondary syphilis cases—the most infectious stages of syphilis—is on the rise, with a greater than 9% increase in reported cases in men, and 34% in women in 2021. Confirmatory testing for this marker is performed upon a positive screen.

HIV (1&2)

HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, is a virus spread via the exposure to bodily fluids, such as sexual intercourse or blood exposure. The virus attacks and impairs immune cells, causing progressive weakness of the immune system. HIV can progress to a condition called AIDS. Confirmatory testing for this marker is performed upon a positive screen.

Gonorrhea

Caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, gonorrhea is a common sexually transmitted infection that can be treated with antibiotics. According to the CDC, many people with gonorrhea have no symptoms, which can lead to delays in seeking treatment and increases in transmission. Treatment may be available for positive results.

Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV), a blood-borne virus. HCV is more commonly transmitted through needles or blood exposure, but can also be spread through sexual intercourse. Confirmatory testing for this marker is performed upon a positive screen.

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV), a form of hepatitis for which there is a vaccine. HBV can be transmitted through blood, semen, and other bodily fluids. This test measures the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg).

Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis (or “trich”) is a very common infection caused by a protozoan parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. Most people, about 70%, who have a trichomoniasis infection do not develop symptoms. Treatment may be available for positive results.
